10 Smart Home Upgrades I Actually Use

Here’s a peek inside my home setup — the gear that runs daily life, keeps routines smooth, and occasionally makes the neighbors wonder if we’ve gone full sci-fi.

The brain of the whole operation.

Every lock, light, garage door, and random LED strip routes through Homey so automations actually work. Sunset lighting, smart charging, routines — it’s all seamless once it’s connected here.

Walk up, it unlocks. Walk away, it locks.

I can let in guests or cleaners from anywhere, and there’s still a physical key for backup (aka “wife approval”). It has jammed once or twice, but the convenience wins.

No more fumbling for remotes — I just ask Google, Siri, or Homey to open the garage when I pull in. One of those little upgrades that feels big.

4. Smart Speakers + Pixel Tablet  🎵

There’s a HomePod Mini in my son’s room, Alexa in my daughter’s, a Google Nest in the house, and a Pixel Tablet that lives on its dock (so it’s always charged, unlike every iPad I’ve ever owned).

Kids play music, I get voice control. Win-win.

Permanent LEDs in the garden, under the steps, around the hot tub.

I can set red/green for Christmas, spooky for Halloween, or just let them run on automations. Aqara switches make it easy to shut everything off early if I want.

6. Aqara Light Switches Everywhere 🔘

Dual and quad-button switches that don’t kill app control — they send signals instead.

So I can dim Hue bulbs, trigger automations, or just keep lights smart without anyone breaking the setup. Even have a giant T1 dome on the landing for dimming.

7. Ubiquiti Networking + CCTV + Doorbell 📡

Rock-solid internet, wired access points across the house, and cameras that record locally to a server (no cloud, no privacy drama). The Ubiquiti doorbell ties right in too.

I’m also mid-upgrade to a 10-gig network with underground cabling because… why not.

8. Smart TVs + Samsung Air Con ❄️

Both hooked into Homey so they just do their thing automatically. No fiddling, no remotes, no “did anyone turn the AC on?” moments.

9. Solar Panels + Tesla Battery + EV Charging 🔋

When I plug in my car, the system talks to the energy provider, finds the cheapest windows, and charges the house battery too.

We end up running the whole house on off-peak energy most days. Homey even texts me if the battery gets too low.

10. Automations Everywhere ⚙️

From lights syncing with sunset to TVs switching off at night, Homey handles hundreds of tiny routines in the background.

It’s the difference between “smart” being a gimmick and smart actually working.
