Hey,
It’s Pete Matheson with a new issue of Experiments in Progress.
There’s no such thing as the best phone anymore. Only the one that fits your priorities.
The Best Phone for Your Priorities (2026)
Phones are splitting into very different directions:
Some are pushing battery life to extremes
Others focus on camera partnerships
Some are about ecosystem simplicity
So instead of comparing specs, here’s how I’d actually think about it 👇
🔋 If you care about battery life, go non-Apple
If your current frustration is “Why am I charging this every night?”, then don’t buy an iPhone or Samsung.
Buy something built for battery first.
Chinese brands are way ahead here:
OnePlus / Oppo / Xiaomi → pushing silicon-carbon batteries
Some niche brands → phones that last multiple days (or even a week)
👉 Trade-off:
Less polished software
Slightly weaker ecosystem
📸 If you care about camera, follow the partnerships
Look for phones working with real camera brands:
Xiaomi × Leica
Oppo × Hasselblad
These consistently produce:
better color science
more “camera-like” photos
stronger zoom / detail
If you travel a lot, shoot content, care about image quality, this matters way more than specs.

🧱 If you’re rough with your tech, buy a rugged phone
There’s a whole category most people ignore:
Ulefone
Doogee
These are drop-proof, water-resistant, and built for extreme use.
You can literally:
drop them on rocks
take them hiking
use them in harsh conditions
👉 Trade-off:
bulky
not premium feeling
But if you break phones regularly, this is the obvious choice.

⚙️ If you just want something that works, stay in an ecosystem
Go with the big ecosystems:
Have a Mac + Apple Watch + iPad → just get an iPhone
Running Samsung everything → stay Samsung
They’re not the most exciting, but they’re the easiest, because everything just connects and works:
messages sync across devices
apps behave predictably
no setup, no tweaking
⚡ Quick decision guide
If you just want the answer:
If you want… | Get this |
|---|---|
Zero friction, everything works | iPhone |
Balance + flexibility | Samsung / Pixel |
Longest battery possible | OnePlus / Xiaomi |
Best camera output | Xiaomi / Oppo |
Something you can’t break | Ulefone / Doogee |
