Hey,
If your phone still works fine but you're wondering whether it's time to upgrade, this one's for you.
By the end, you'll know which phones genuinely hold up after 5 years, which ones to avoid, and how to tell when your phone is actually done.
The Phones That Still Feel Good After 5 Years
Here's my list of what holds up, and what to watch out for:
I know a lot of people still using an S21 Ultra or S22 Ultra, and none of them are complaining.
Because:
Flagship hardware ages well. Fast chip, lots of RAM, a great screen.
The camera system is still excellent. It holds its own against much newer phones.
The screen still looks fantastic. That's usually what you notice every day.
I'm not hearing many complaints from iPhone 12 or 13 users either.
These are 5 to 6 year old phones, and people just… keep using them.
Here's the deal:
Apple supports phones for ages. iOS 27 runs on everything back to the iPhone 11. That's a major update on a phone from 2020.
Performance holds up. Apple's chips are overpowered for everyday stuff, so the phone still feels quick.
Resale value stays strong. A used 12 or 13 is still easy to sell.
The trade-off: the iPhone 12 and 13 don't get Apple Intelligence. That needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. If AI features matter to you, this isn't your phone. If you just want a phone that works, it's still a great shout.
It's not five years old, but it's the phone I'd bet on from the Android side. It's great right now, and the hardware is built to last.
The software promise is 4 years of Android updates and 6 years of security patches.
If you want a flagship that feels premium without Samsung or Apple pricing, the OnePlus 13 is the one to watch.
Looking at all of these, the pattern is pretty clear:
Buy a flagship. Cheaper phones cut corners that you notice by year three.
Check the update promise. A great phone with no security patches is a bad phone.
Don't write it off over the battery. That's the first thing to fade, and it's usually fixable.
Buying last year's flagship is becoming the smartest move in tech.
Which phone have you kept the longest?
